September 21, 2014 "Climate March"
Blue skies are spanned across New York City today, which marks the 35th anniversary of one of the largest anti-nuclear marches when one million gathered in Central Park on June 12, 1982.
Ahead of today’s anniversary I watched “In Our Hands” documentary that spotlights the 1982 demonstration. The film rekindled some memories of the peaceful September 2014 "Climate March" in New York, which I attended.
Thanks to longstanding concern about nuclear power, the Indian Point nuclear power plant nearest to New York City is now in the process of decommissioning. People are discussing the future of the plant’s waste storage.
The Nuclear Weapons Convention negotiation conference starts this week in the United Nations, and Women's March To Ban the Bomb will host a peace demonstration in New York City this Saturday, June 17.
I will participate with members of our group Manhattan Project for a nuclear-free world in order to protest the US -Japan Nuclear Energy Cooperation Agreement. We oppose Japan becoming a potential nuclear weapon holder.
A society where it is difficult to raise voices starts when people stop raising voices. Let's raise our voice for peace.
Solidarity,
Yasuyo
